SUMMARY:Lecture - Janet Williams
DESCRIPTION:Julian of Norwich and the Last Judgement\n\n\n\nVenue:\nSt Mark’s Church\, Leeds Road\, Harrogate (& Zoom option)\nDate:\nSaturday 28th March 2026\, 10.00 – 12.00 noon with breakfast available from 9.30 am\nTickets:\n£10 (including breakfast and refreshments)\nStudents: £7; Under 18s free.\nZoom live-stream: £5 per person\, must be purchased online in advance.Buy tickets on EventBrite\n\n\n\n“To a church apparently obsessed with sin\, death and ‘Doom’ the fourteenth-century visionary Julian of Norwich proposed that there is no anger in God towards us\, that God finds in us nothing that needs forgiveness\, and that sin itself is ‘behovely’ (fitting). Julian also claims to be faithful to the traditional teaching of the Church\, yet she has been described as putting a bomb under the church’s teaching on divine anger\, a bomb which left no part standing. How can we make sense of this\, and do we dare to believe her?” \nSpeaker Bio \nJanet studied Classics and Philosophy at Oxford University before competing a Masters Degree in Patristic Theology at Oxford\, and a PhD in Religious Studies with the University of Winchester. A stint in investment banking in London and Tokyo was followed by a career in education\, teaching Religious Studies\, Theology\, Classics\, and Philosophy at universities and colleges in Japan and the UK. Ordained in Gloucester in 2009\, she served as a Minister in Secular Employment before taking up leadership of the West of England Ministry Training Course in 2012. She joined St Hild theological college as Vice Principal in summer 2018 and lives in Mirfield. \nBuy tickets on EventBrite

SUMMARY:Lecture - Isabelle Hamley
DESCRIPTION:Happy are those: happiness\, wellbeing and the life of faith in the Psalms\n\n\n\nVenue:\nSt Mark’s Church\, Leeds Road\, Harrogate (& Zoom option)\nDate:\nSaturday 24th January 2026\, 10.00 – 12.00 noon with breakfast available from 9.30 am\nTickets:\nThis event has now passed\n\n\n\nHappiness is big business in the world out there: it motivates consumerism\, advertising\, political choices\, and shapes communities; lack of happiness is often associated with mental health struggles. Yet the church rarely speaks of happiness\, or of how a Christian framework may help us think of happiness in faithful and distinctive ways. This talk will explore how the Psalms help think about happiness\, its contours and its challenges\, and how we can develop a positive Christian vision for wellbeing. \nSpeaker Bio \nDr Hamley is the Principal of Ridley Hall\, a theological college in Cambridge. Isabelle’s first love is Scripture\, and the Old Testament in particular. She has written extensively about the book of Judges\, and around questions of justice\, violence and otherness. She is now writing a commentary on the book of Ruth.

SUMMARY:Lecture - Guy Donegan-Cross
DESCRIPTION:Discipleship: So What?\n\n\n\nVenue:\nSt Mark’s Church\, Leeds Road\, Harrogate (& Zoom option)\nDate:\nSaturday 15th November 2025\, 10.00 – 12.00 noon with breakfast available from 9.30 am\nTickets:\nThis event has now passed\n\n\n\n“Why do we even use this word? I have no idea what it really means.” \nEvery denomination says making disciples is the main priority. But discipleship can be a mystifying thing. What does it really mean? How can it be a gift\, rather than a stumbling block?\nAnd\, even if we have an inkling of its meaning\, what is really different about Christian disciples? In our lived experience? \nAfter all\, in many ways people of faith\, no faith or some faith seem to live quite similar lives. We are born\, we work\, we shop\, we sleep\, we love\, we struggle\, we laugh\, we cry\, we pay taxes (perhaps!) and we die (definitely!). If you’re interested in the questions ‘What difference does this make?’ Or ‘What is the way?’ this HSTM morning is for you. It is a little bit about what Christians believe\, but it is more about how what Christians believe shapes our lives. \nGuy Donegan-Cross will introduce two books he has published this year with BRF: Discipleship: Start this Way and Discipleship: Walk this Way as a way of exploring these questions. Both books are available to order now at brfonline.org.uk/guy-donegan-cross. \nSpeaker Bio \nGuy is currently Enabler of Learning for Discipleship and Mission for Church of England Birmingham\, where he has responsibility for resourcing a culture of discipleship across a hugely diverse area. He has engaged in parish ministry in four different contexts\, most recently leading St Mark’s\, Harrogate. He is chair of the Simeon’s patronage trust\, with responsibility for the patronage of 180 livings across England. He is passionate about discipleship\, the relationship between charismatic and contemplative spirituality\, and political and environmental concerns. He loves amateur dramatics\, improvisation\, live music\, novels\, walking\, jazz\, and his Norfolk Terrier Bess.

SUMMARY:Lecture - David Ford
DESCRIPTION:St. John’s Gospel: A Lifetime’s Study\n\n\n\nVenue:\nSt Mark’s Church\, Leeds Road\, Harrogate (& Zoom option)\nDate:\nSaturday 13th September 2025\, 10.00 – 12.00 noon with breakfast available from 9.30 am\nTickets:\nThis event has now passed\n\n\n\nAfter spending over twenty years on ‘The Gospel of John. A Theological Commentary‘ (2021) and then a few more years on a follow-up ‘Lent Plus’ book\, ‘Meeting God in John: A Companion for Lent\, Holy Week\, Easter\, and Beyond‘ (November 2025)\, I want to share some of the main insights that John has given me. These include seeking answers ro questions such as:  What was John’s aim in writing the Gospel? How should we understand the Prologue? Who is Jesus? What is the meaning of his crucifixion? What are the essential Christian practices taught by Jesus? Can John give us a spirituality for serious times such as ours? How can we share in Jesus’s passionate desire for the unity in love of his followers? How should we read John now? \nSpeaker Bio \nDavid F. Ford OBE is Regius Professor of Divinity Emeritus in the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of Selwyn College. \nAlongside continuing work on Christian theology and on inter-faith relations\, Professor Ford’s current research includes work on: the Gospel of John; glorification; theology\, modernity and the arts; Scriptural Reasoning; contemporary worldviews; and education in schools and universities. In 2021 Baker Academic published The Gospel of John: A Theological Commentary. \nDavid was born in Dublin and is an Irish citizen. He read Classics at Trinity College Dublin\, and then Theology and Religious Studies in Cambridge\, Yale\, and Tübingen. Prior to taking up his post in Cambridge he taught in the University of Birmingham (1976-1991)\, where he lived in the inner city and engaged in local church and community life and in urban theology.

SUMMARY:Lecture - Nicola Slee
DESCRIPTION:Abba Amma: Improvisations on the Lord’s Prayer (live lecture)\n\n\n\nVenue:\nSt Mark’s Church\, Leeds Road\, Harrogate (& Zoom option)\nDate:\nSaturday 22th March 2025\, 10.00 – 12.00 noon with breakfast available from 9.30 am\nTickets:\nThis event has now passed\n\n\n\nThe Lord’s Prayer is a prayer text and practice that unites Christians worldwide and puts us in touch with Jesus and Christians throughout the ages. People of other faiths and traditions are also drawn to this prayer. But how do we pray this prayer today\, in light of our growing awareness of the dangers of patriarchal and monarchical language and thinking? In this lecture\, Nicola Slee will share something of her own journey with the Lord’s Prayer and suggest that we are called\, not so much to repeat the prayer unvaryingly\, as to live in its pattern and improvise around it to find our own authentic way of praying and our own authentic relationship to the Abba Amma God of Jesus. \nSpeaker Bio \nProfessor Nicola Slee is a well-known writer and speaker\, theologian and poet. She is Professorial Research Fellow at the Queen’s Foundation for Ecumenical Theological Education\, Birmingham and Professor of Feminist Practical Theology at the Vrije Universiteit\, Amsterdam. The lecture will be based on Nicola’s recent book of the same name\, and she will bring copies to sell at a discount

SUMMARY:Lecture - Arun Arora
DESCRIPTION:Living Faithfully: Rediscovering Michael Ramsey’s Five Spiritual Helps (live lecture)\n\n\n\nVenue:\nSt Mark’s Church\, Leeds Road\, Harrogate (& Zoom option)\nDate:\nSaturday 18th January 2025\, 10.00 – 12.00 noon with breakfast available from 9.30 am\nTickets:\nThis event has now passed\n\n\n\nIn a highly appropriate lecture for the New Year\, the Rt Revd Dr Arun Arora\, Bishop of Kirkstall\, will lecture on Living Faithfully: Rediscovering Michael Ramsey’s Five Spiritual Helps.\nMichael Ramsey (the 100th Archbishop of Canterbury\, 1961-1974) offered his Five Helps as spiritual principles for living a faithful Christian life. Although Ramsay formulated these many decades ago\, Bishop Arun will help us to understand how relevant they remain and how we can use them as foundations for a Christ-centered life. \nBishop Arun is known as a thought-provoking and entertaining speaker\, and we are delighted that he is able to give this lecture. \nSpeaker Bio \nBishop Arun trained and worked as an employment lawyer before moving into public relations as Director of Communications for Birmingham diocese Press Officer for the Bishop of Birmingham. Whilst training for ordination and serving his curacy at St Mark’s in Harrogate\, he was also Director of Communications for the Archbishop of York. Following a time in Pioneer Ministry in the West Midlands\, he served as Director of Communications for the Archbishops’ Council before returning north as vicar of St Nicholas’ Church\, Durham. He was appointed Bishop of Kirkstall in the Diocese of Leeds in 2022.

SUMMARY:Lecture - Alan Garrow
DESCRIPTION:The Didache Discoveries: Two Missing Books of the Bible (live lecture)\n\n\n\nVenue:\nSt Mark’s Church\, Leeds Road\, Harrogate (& Zoom option)\nDate:\nSaturday 23rd November 2024\, 10.00 – 12.00 noon with breakfast available from 9.30 am\nTickets:\nThis event has now passed\n\n\n\nAlan has recorded an introductory video on YouTube – see below \nIn 1873 Archbishop Philotheos Bryennios discovered the only surviving copy of a text called ‘The Didache’ or ‘The Teaching of the Lord\, by the Twelve Apostles\, to the Gentiles’. This book nearly achieved inclusion in the New Testament canon. After it was placed in the ‘second rank’\, it disappeared for well over a thousand years. Since its rediscovery it has baffled scholars. No one has been able to work out who wrote it\, when\, where or why. In this lecture Alan Garrow presents a new solution to the puzzle. The Didache is not a single text. Instead\, it is two that have been spliced together and overlaid with additional material. When that process is reversed two ancient treasures emerge. The first is the Complete Apostolic Decree (mentioned in Acts 15)\, the earliest Christian document and the text that set Christianity on course to become a religion separate from Judaism. The second is the Missing Epistle of John (mentioned in 3 John 9)\, a text that helps illuminate doctrines and practices that remain essential for Christians today. \nSpeaker Bio \nAlan Garrow is Vicar of St Peter’s Harrogate and a Member of the Sheffield Centre for Interdisciplinary Biblical Studies. He has published widely in the field of New Testament studies and has a particular interest in how the New Testament texts were used in early Christian worship. More information about his research and writing is available at www.alangarrow.com.

SUMMARY:Lecture - David M. Moffitt
DESCRIPTION:Looking through the Kaleidoscope: Hebrews’ Use of Old Testament Narratives in the Light of Jesus’ Ascension and Awaited Return (live lecture)\n\n\n\nVenue:\nSt Mark’s Church\, Leeds Road\, Harrogate (& Zoom option)\nDate:\nSaturday 28th September 2024\, 10.00 – 12.00 noon with breakfast available from 9.30 am\nTickets:\nThis event has now passed\n\n\n\nHebrews’ engagement with the Old Testament is among the most exciting and creative in the New Testament. It creates a kaleidoscope of Biblical texts so that their interaction draws out the author’s fundamental convictions about Jesus. The resulting images bring out new theological insights about Jesus and the congregation. \nWe will explore three Old Testament figures mentioned in Hebrews—the high priest\, Moses\, and Joshua. \nAll three of these figures left God’s people to do important work for them\, before returning. This return of the absent figure forms a significant\, part of Hebrews’ argument. Thus joined together they illuminate who Jesus is. They also show what the ascended Christ is doing for us now and how we should understand our own identity and situation as we await his return. \nDavid Moffitt is one of the very few contemporary scholars to provide fresh and compelling readings of the enigmatic Letter to the Hebrews. I have learned an enormous amount from him; in fact I credit him with transforming my whole understanding of sacrifice in biblical thought. Also\, unlike some top exegetical scholars\, he is a lively and engaging speaker! – Tom Wright \nSpeaker Bio \nDr Moffitt was appointed Reader in New Testament Studies at St Andrews University in 2013\, having previously taught New Testament at Duke Divinity School and Campbell University Divinity School. His research interests orbit around the various ways the earliest Christians understood Jesus and their own identities in relation to Jewish scripture\, practices\, and beliefs. His work is especially focused on the Epistle to the Hebrews and the strategies the text employs to interpret early Christian claims about Jesus’ person\, death\, resurrection\, and ascension in high-priestly and sacrificial terms. His book on Hebrews (Atonement and the Logic of Resurrection in the Epistle to the Hebrews) attempts to show that the Christology and Soteriology developed by the author rests upon his correlation of the basic narrative of early Christian proclamation (i.e.\, Jesus’ life\, death\, resurrection\, and ascension) with the ritual process of the Yom Kippur sacrifices\, the end goal of which was the restoration and maintenance of fellowship between God and creation (i.e.\, atonement).

SUMMARY:Lecture - Mark Vasey-Saunders
DESCRIPTION:Why can’t the church talk about sexuality (live lecture)\n\n\n\nVenue:\nSt Mark’s Church\, Leeds Road\, Harrogate (& Zoom option)\nDate:\nSaturday 27th January 2024\, 10.00 – 12.00 noon with breakfast available from 9.30 am\nTickets:\n\n\nGeneral admission: £8\nStudent admission: £5\nUnder 18s: free\nZoom admission: £5\n\n\nTickets:\nThis event has now passed\n\n\n\nPlease note that this lecture aims to explore why this topic has been\, and continues to be\, so difficult for the church to discuss\, rather than arguing for one side or the other.\nWe are delighted to welcome Rev’d Dr Mark Vasey-Saunders to deliver a live lecture for Harrogate School of Theology and Mission on Saturday 27th January 2024\, at St Mark’s Church\, Leeds Road\, Harrogate\, HG2 8AY\, starting at 10 am on the important topic\, Why can’t the church talk about sexuality? \nA common conceptualisation of the current debate over sexuality is that it is one between traditionalists and revisionists. In this lecture\, Mark Vasey-Saunders argues that this is based on a misunderstanding of the degree to which both conservatives and liberals represent a break with earlier tradition. The current sexuality debate is between two different ways of interpreting the tradition of the church in a modern context. \nSpeaker Bio\nMark studied English Literature and History in York at the then University College of Ripon & York St John\, and briefly worked for IFES in Ukraine before training for ordination at Cranmer Hall. He has worked in several different dioceses as a University Chaplain\, Team Vicar & Pioneer Minister and more recently as Academic Tutor for St Hild College. He completed his PhD from Durham on Evangelical responses to homosexuality in 2013. He oversees the formation of part time and full time Anglican ordinands at St Hild Sheffield\, as well as coordinating the College’s work with Curates. He leads modules in Postgraduate study skills\, Doctrine\, Ethics\, and Anglicanism. Mark is married to Leah\, who is the Vicar of Lancaster Priory Church and Chair of On Fire Mission. \nMark Vasey-Saunders’s new book Defusing the Sexuality Debate was published in June 2023 \nReviews of this book:\nThis book could not be more timely and helpful for those on all sides of the debate. Mark explores the recent history of the evangelical writing on sexuality and deconstructs the idea of an unchanging evangelical consensus on these questions. He opens up an excellent third way for evangelicals to hold diverse views on sexuality questions without scapegoating others or unnecessary division. One of the most helpful books on this debate I’ve yet read. The Right Revd Steven Croft\nMark Vasey-Saunders has written a timely\, wise and essential book\, taking current sexuality debates and placing them in a deeper cultural context. All parties should step back and read this clear and eirenic book with humility and openness. \n The Right Revd Nicholas Baines \nWhatever our perspective on sexuality\, Mark Vasey-Saunders is an essential conversation partner who raises crucial questions. Did the earliest Christians teach what is now presented as the traditional view on sexuality? What is really at stake in the current conflict? How can we avoid demonising each other? Defusing the Sexuality Debate approaches this thorniest of contemporary issues with integrity\, humility and rigour. The result is a significant and consequential intervention – one of few contributions with the potential to open up genuinely new horizons. Mark’s careful research empowers us to think more deeply\, and it won’t leave readers unchanged. At its heart is an eirenic plea: we can understand each other better; we can take a longer view; we can be the community of peace the gospel deserves and our world needs. \n Prof Mark Powell \nMark Vasey-Saunders has established himself as one of the sharpest and most insightful commentators now writing on the disputes over sexuality in the Church of England. If the Church is to be delivered from the compulsions that are tearing it apart\, then earnestly heeding his call for Christian humility and heart-searching truthfulness may just be its best hope. \n Prof Robert Song

SUMMARY:Lecture - Professor Paul Foster
DESCRIPTION:Special offer – buy a 2023/24 season lecture pass\, and attend all four lectures for the price of three. \n\n\nMeet the Apostolic Fathers: Christianity in the first half of the Second Century (live lecture)\n\n\n\nVenue:\nSt Mark’s Church\, Leeds Road\, Harrogate (& Zoom option)\nDate:\nSaturday 7th October 2023\, 10.00 – 12.00 noon with breakfast available from 9.30 am\nTickets:\n\nGeneral admission: £8\nStudent admission: £5\nUnder 18s: free\nZoom admission: £5\n\n2023/4 Lecture Pass:\nBuy tickets to all 4 lectures for the price of 3\nTickets for just this lecture:\nThis event has now passed\n\n\n\nDuring the first and second centuries a group of miscellaneous Christian leaders wrote down their understanding of the meaning of Jesus Christ’s life\, death and resurrection. These authors were considered by later Biblical scholars to be the next generation of Apostles and as a result were named The Apostolic Fathers\, and their works are considered by many to be the most important collection of post-New Testament writings. Indeed a number of these texts were considered for inclusion in the New Testament\, but later rejected. Their obvious significance stems from the fact that they are the first Christian writings produced outside the New Testament Canon and as such contain an essential insight into the development of the early Christian Church and Christian thinking. Much Christian Doctrine came\, not from the New Testament\, but from the writings produced by the early church and in particular the writings of the Apostolic Fathers. Therefore\, these texts are crucial to an understanding of the shaping of Christian thought and Christian doctrine. \nThis lecture is the rescheduled March lecture. \nSpeaker Bio \nProf Paul Foster’s says: \nMy motivation for undertaking theological studies was to be able to read the Bible in its original languages. Although achieving this goal was not something that was quickly realised\, the benefits have been enormous. Reading the New Testament in the very words that the authors penned opens up new horizons of understanding\, it helps one see the original writers’ concerns more clearly\, and brings the world of the New Testament alive. \nI enjoy working across a range of New Testament and Early Christian literature\, since that permits a holistic view of the development and emergence of the early Jesus movement. In particular in relation to the New Testament\, I have worked on pre-gospel sources such as Q\, and the M source although I am sceptical that the latter ever existed as a coherent source. In relation to the New Testament writing a long-term interest is the Gospel of Matthew\, and several letters of Paul including Colossians and the Thessalonian epistles. Furthermore\, the phenomenon of wider gospel literature\, known as the non-canonical gospels\, is also another area that has fascinated me as a window into the piety of early believers. I have written extensively on the text known as the Gospel of Peter\, as well as a range of other non-canonical gospels. \nA final major area of interest in my academic biography is collection of writings known as the Apostolic Fathers. These writings reflect the emergence of structures that became foundational in the early church. The writings of Ignatius and Polycarp depict early Christianity in the first half of the second century. \nTogether these interests permit an overview of Christianity in the first two centuries of its existence.

As Roy puts it\, ‘The tectonic plates\, politically\, economically\, environmentally and societally are shifting. The idea of returning to normal is to deny reality. In the light of such a changing world and church\, we ask\, How Then Shall We Live? How do we sing the Lord song in a strange land? What does it mean to love God and follow Christ in a changing world?  As we embrace the challenges and opportunities of the present times look to the future that is uncertain\, we will explore the wisdom that comes to us in scripture and the monastic traditions of Benedictine and Celtic spirituality. SUMMARY:Canon Dr Mark Powley
DESCRIPTION:In Search of the Presence of God: How We Meet God in Worship\nWhat is the presence of God? How do we come to know it? Is it possible to make sense of our experience in a way that honours both God and science? Mark Powley will share the fruits of ten years of PhD research on the presence of God in worship. There will be an opportunity to consider the ‘signs of God’ in our own lives. The session will also look at how we as human beings enable and shape experiences of God’s presence. Ultimately the presence of God is not the experience of a thing\, but a rich process of partnership in which each of us plays a role. As we regather after lockdown\, this may help us be more aware of how we need each other if we are to seek Gods face. \nCost:  £8.00 per session\, including continental breakfast available from 9.30 am and mid-morning refreshments (Covid 19 guidance allowing);  \nstudents: £5 per lecture;  \nunder 18s free.  \nFees payable preferably in advance by the online booking system Eventbrite or on the day by contactless card or cheque (to Harrogate School of Theology and Mission).\nZoom live-stream of lectures: £5 per person\, bookable via Eventbrite.

SUMMARY:Revd Ian Parkinson (Leadership Specialist\, CPAS) "For the equipping of the saints: the gift of Christian leadership" (live lecture)
DESCRIPTION:Effectiveness in leadership is not measured so much by what any leader achieves but rather by whom they raise up and equip for service. The development and empowering of others certainly seems to have been a top priority for Jesus and those who followed after him. With particular reference to his example\, in this session we will unpack the NT leadership emphasis on growing others in discipleship and ministry\, and explore what this might mean for us today.

SUMMARY:Prof. Keith Elliott "What makes a book 'holy scripture'?" (live lecture)
DESCRIPTION:Professor Elliott will concentrate on the New Testament but will discuss why\, for instance\, the Gospel of Thomas or the so-called gnostic gospels (which Dan Brown relied on to claim that Jesus was married to Mary Magdalene) are not ‘holy scripture’.  \nProfessor Elliott has suggested these texts for further reading related to his lecture:\nJ.K. Elliott\, The Apocryphal New Testament: A Collection of Apocryphal Christian Literature in an English Translation based on M.R. James (Oxford: Clarendon Press\, 1993; paperback 2005) .\n\nJ.K.Elliott\, The Apocryphal Jesus: Legends of the Early Church (Oxford: Oxford University Press\, 1996; revised paperback 2006).\n\nDavid R. SUMMARY:Revd Dr Malcolm Guite "Christ and the Poetic Imagination"
DESCRIPTION:This will be live-streamed via Zoom\, starting at 10am. There will be an opportunity to ask questions after the lecture\, and we expect to finish about 11.30am. We are very excited to be welcoming Revd Dr Malcolm Guite who is well known as a poet and was due to come to us in March at the start of the first lock-down. \nWe are making a small charge of £4 per computer / tablet etc. for this lecture and we have some tickets available free for Under 18s. As this is the event we had to cancel at the end of last season\, we are offering this event free to 2019/20 Season Ticket holders\, but please book in with Eventbrite and select this ticket option. \nThe Zoom link will be under “Additional Information” at the end of your confirmation e-mail from Eventbritre. We will send out a reminder to ticket holders a couple of days before the event. \nIf you have any questions\, please contact us on info@hstm.org.uk \nWe hope to see many of you on 5th December \nMalcolm Guite will explore the links and analogies between the working of the poetic imagination\nand the understanding of Christ as Word made Flesh. In particular\, he will look at how far an\nunderstanding of the Logos\, and the doctrine of incarnation may underpin and give grounding to\nworks of literary art and imagination. Malcolm will look at how Shakespeare’s account of the poetic\nimagination in a Midsummer Night’s Dream borrows strongly from the language about incarnation in\nJohn’s Gospel. After developing some of the parallels between the unique mystery of the incarnation\nand the continuous mysteries of human creativity and art\, Malcolm will then look at how a fresh\nencounter with the Doctrine of Christ as Logos became central for Coleridge and led him to a new\ntheology of imagination. Finally he will look at how Christian Faith clarified and deepened the\nimaginative life of some of the Oxford Inklings\, particularly CS Lewis. \nFor more information about Malcolm Guite\, go to “Our Speakers”

SUMMARY:Rt Revd James Jones KBE "The spiritual and moral imperatives in the life of Christ" (live lecture)
DESCRIPTION:The former Bishop of Liverpool\, Rt Revd James Jones KBE\, is perhaps best known as the Chair of the Hillsborough Panel which reported in 2012 on the events surrounding the FA Cup semi-final at Hillsborough when 96 Liverpool supporters died. He will be speaking on ‘The spiritual and moral imperatives in the life of Christ’. \nIn the Gospel of Luke Jesus says fourteen times ‘It behoves me…’ He talks explicitly about the moral and spiritual imperatives under which he lives and dies. In an age that is at sea about what is right and wrong can these imperatives be applied to our own lives? \n\nBecause of the personal nature of some of his lecture and the likelihood that the main content will form part of a new book\, there is no recording of his lecture available on our website.\n \n\nBishop James Jones has been in contact to say he found his engagement both with the Harrogate School of Theology and the students on the St Hild Easter School very stimulating. He has now published on his website the main part of his lecture from January on ‘The spiritual and moral imperatives in the life of Christ’. He also used the material for the St Hild College Easter School. You will find his lecture at http://bishopjamesjones.com/speeches/harrogate_school_of_theology.pdf and we hope that you will find the text a stimulus during these difficult times.

SUMMARY:Revd Prof Jeremy Duff "Today is the day – for everyone! Growing Church in Luke and Acts"
DESCRIPTION:In Jesus’ lifetime\, people met him face to face\, and he gathered around him a community of Jewish men and women who thought he was the one to redeem Israel. Today we use the language of ‘meeting Jesus’ and of growing the church (community)\, but mean something a little different –  meeting Jesus in a non-physical way\, and a community made up of people from every nation and culture. In this lecture we will see how Luke and Acts together achieve this transformation\, and present a Jesus who meets everyone ‘today’\, and how Jesus’ community breaks boundaries. Come and engage with what the bible says about conversion\, response and the call to abandon our comfort for the sake of those that Jesus is saving – if you dare!

SUMMARY:Rt Rev Dr Helen-Ann Hartley: "To read\, mark\, learn and inwardly digest: some reflections on a diet of Biblical Interpretation"
DESCRIPTION:The Rt Rev Dr Helen-Ann Hartley is the Bishop of Ripon. She will be speaking on “To read\, mark\, learn and inwardly digest: some reflections on a diet of Biblical Interpretation.” \nThe Bible is the foundation of our faith\, and we probably have our favourite bits\, but what about the parts we don’t understand\, or don’t agree with? If it’s all the Word of God how do we navigate its terrain? In this lecture\, Bishop Helen-Ann will share some of her own reflections on a number of years pondering these questions and help us to reflect positively on how we can live faithfully with Scripture in our present context. \nBishop Helen-Ann is an able communicator and her lecture will be very accessible as well as challenging us to consider how we use scripture.

SUMMARY:Revd Prof Dr Charlotte Methuen The Reformation and Brexit: history and the position of the UK in Europe
DESCRIPTION:The English Reformation has been cited as evidence both for and against the decision of the UK to leave the EU.  Henry VIII’s idiosyncratically independent stance has been contrasted with the European dimension of Thomas Cranmer’s contacts and the influence of continental Reformers in England and in Scotland.  This paper will examine those arguments\, and explore them in the context of the engagement of the Churches of England and Scotland in the debates surrounding Brexit.  What insights might the history of the church offer in understanding British politics today?
