SUMMARY:Seminar - April 2026: Wilding Disciple-making and Mission
DESCRIPTION:Wilding Disciple-making and Mission\n\n\n\nVenue:\nWoodlands Methodist Harrogate\nDate:\n18th April 2026\, 10.00 – 12.00 noon with breakfast available from 9.30 am\n\n\nTickets:\n\n\nGeneral admission: £8\nUnder 18s: free\n\n\nBuy tickets on EventBrite\n\n\n\n\n\nWe are delighted to invite the Rev’d Ben Askew to deliver April’s Seminar. \nOver the last few years there has been a growing interest in the idea of re-wilding.  This broad term describes a commitment to letting natural processes lead land management and conservation.  It has led many households to discover wildflowers in the lawn during ‘no mow may’\, to the reintroduction of keystone species into eco-systems\, and to a re-discovery of the abundance of creation\, when allowed space and freedom. I’m keen to learn from this ecological movement\, partly because so much of my faith has been grown by enjoying wilder spaces\, but also because I think we might find that God’s wild Spirit works in surprising and re-energising ways among us as we ease back from control and learn unforced rhythms of grace. \n  \nSpeaker biography to follow. \nBuy tickets on EventBrite

SUMMARY:Seminar - February 2026: Unlocking the wisdom of John’s Gospel
DESCRIPTION:Unlocking the wisdom of John’s Gospel\nAn introduction to David Ford’s Theological Commentary on John’s Gospel\n\n\n\nVenue:\nWoodlands Methodist Harrogate\nDate:\n28th February 2025\, 10.00 – 12.00 noon with breakfast available from 9.30 am\nTickets:\nThis event has now passed\n\n\n\nDavid Ford’s Commentary on John’s Gospel is widely regarded as a new profound and insightful commentary. He clarifies the purpose of the Gospel and how it relates to the Synoptic Gospels and the Septuagint. Ford shows how John emphasises the reality of the Spirit abiding in us\, the lived reality of eternal life\, with profound and practical inspiration and guidance to disciples of Jesus. Ford reveals John’s deep challenges and the Spirit’s invitation to us to participate in its continuing\, surprising and unfolding work in the world. \nOf clear relevance to our troubled times\, Ford sees John as giving his readers a global horizon that “can unite them with the desire of Jesus for an ultimate unity of all people and all creation in love and peace.” \nIn this seminar\, Revd Ian Johnston\, who has been a leader of Bible Studies based on Ford’s Commentary\, will provide an introduction to this remarkable work. \nParticipants will be sent\, in advance\, a pdf copy of the chapter on John 3\, which Ian will use to introduce the main theses of the Commentary and to stimulate group discussion. \nIn continuing our desire to share this work\, HSTM is considering running in the Autumn another of our Bible Studies on John using Ford’s Commentary. SUMMARY:Lifetrack seminar (DVD & facilitated discussion)
DESCRIPTION:Theology and living wisely part 1 –  Prof David Ford \nProf. David Ford explores how theology is really about having a life-long conversation with God and drawing on the wisdom of prior conversations as recorded in the Scriptures. Those conversations involve the disciplines of listening as well as conversing\, thinking as well as feeling (faith has its various moods!) and writing as well as reading. Through engaging in our own conversations with God\, and learning from wider conversations about God\, we can grow in what Prof. Ford calls ‘doing theology for God’s sake’. Come and hear more from this arresting speaker and enter the dialogue as we all seek to live wisely together. \nCost £2 \, Under 18s free \nZoom link and talk summary will be sent out a couple of days in advance to ticket holders.

SUMMARY:Bibletrack seminar "St Paul’s Letters part 1" Dr Chris Tilling (DVD & facilitated discussion)
DESCRIPTION:We have been carefully planning the best way to deliver our Events during the Covid crisis. We are delighted to offer you the option of attending our first Event either in-person at the Mowbray Community Church\, or on-line\, via Zoom. There is a full Risk Assessment in place\, which anyone is welcome to see\, if they want to check in advance the measures we have put in place for attendance in person. \nThe first Seminar will inevitably be a “trial run” to allow us to check and fine tune the technology. There will therefore be no charge for this particular seminar. \nIt will\, however be essential for participants to book in advance through Eventbrite. \nEach link will take you to the relevant Eventbrite Booking Line where you will be asked to confirm the number of people attending with you (including you)\, and to provide an email address for booking confirmation and to receive essential information\, specific to your attendance choice nearer to the date of the Event.

SUMMARY:Dr Graham Tomlin: The Wisdom Literature part 2
DESCRIPTION:Second of two in-depth sessions on the so-called wisdom literature of the Hebrew Scriptures (our Old Testament) which lays foundations for much of Judeo-Christian reflection through the ages and is still influential today\, although often unacknowledged by secular thinkers. \nThis is an important part of the Bible Jesus and Paul used and without which we cannot begin to appreciate the full impact of the New Testament.
