SUMMARY:Seminar - February 2026: Unlocking the wisdom of John’s Gospel
DESCRIPTION:Unlocking the wisdom of John’s Gospel\nAn introduction to David Ford’s Theological Commentary on John’s Gospel\n\n\n\nVenue:\nWoodlands Methodist Harrogate\nDate:\n28th February 2025\, 10.00 – 12.00 noon with breakfast available from 9.30 am\nTickets:\nThis event has now passed\n\n\n\nDavid Ford’s Commentary on John’s Gospel is widely regarded as a new profound and insightful commentary. He clarifies the purpose of the Gospel and how it relates to the Synoptic Gospels and the Septuagint. Ford shows how John emphasises the reality of the Spirit abiding in us\, the lived reality of eternal life\, with profound and practical inspiration and guidance to disciples of Jesus. Ford reveals John’s deep challenges and the Spirit’s invitation to us to participate in its continuing\, surprising and unfolding work in the world. \nOf clear relevance to our troubled times\, Ford sees John as giving his readers a global horizon that “can unite them with the desire of Jesus for an ultimate unity of all people and all creation in love and peace.” \nIn this seminar\, Revd Ian Johnston\, who has been a leader of Bible Studies based on Ford’s Commentary\, will provide an introduction to this remarkable work. \nParticipants will be sent\, in advance\, a pdf copy of the chapter on John 3\, which Ian will use to introduce the main theses of the Commentary and to stimulate group discussion. \nIn continuing our desire to share this work\, HSTM is considering running in the Autumn another of our Bible Studies on John using Ford’s Commentary. SUMMARY:Lecture - Janet Williams
DESCRIPTION:Julian of Norwich and the Last Judgement\n\n\n\nVenue:\nSt Mark’s Church\, Leeds Road\, Harrogate (& Zoom option)\nDate:\nSaturday 28th March 2026\, 10.00 – 12.00 noon with breakfast available from 9.30 am\nTickets:\n£10 (including breakfast and refreshments)\nStudents: £7; Under 18s free.\nZoom live-stream: £5 per person\, must be purchased online in advance.Buy tickets on EventBrite\n\n\n\n“To a church apparently obsessed with sin\, death and ‘Doom’ the fourteenth-century visionary Julian of Norwich proposed that there is no anger in God towards us\, that God finds in us nothing that needs forgiveness\, and that sin itself is ‘behovely’ (fitting). Julian also claims to be faithful to the traditional teaching of the Church\, yet she has been described as putting a bomb under the church’s teaching on divine anger\, a bomb which left no part standing. How can we make sense of this\, and do we dare to believe her?” \nSpeaker Bio \nJanet studied Classics and Philosophy at Oxford University before competing a Masters Degree in Patristic Theology at Oxford\, and a PhD in Religious Studies with the University of Winchester. A stint in investment banking in London and Tokyo was followed by a career in education\, teaching Religious Studies\, Theology\, Classics\, and Philosophy at universities and colleges in Japan and the UK. Ordained in Gloucester in 2009\, she served as a Minister in Secular Employment before taking up leadership of the West of England Ministry Training Course in 2012. She joined St Hild theological college as Vice Principal in summer 2018 and lives in Mirfield. \nBuy tickets on EventBrite

SUMMARY:Seminar - April 2026: Wilding Disciple-making and Mission
DESCRIPTION:Wilding Disciple-making and Mission\n\n\n\nVenue:\nWoodlands Methodist Harrogate\nDate:\n18th April 2026\, 10.00 – 12.00 noon with breakfast available from 9.30 am\n\n\nTickets:\n\n\nGeneral admission: £8\nUnder 18s: free\n\n\nBuy tickets on EventBrite\n\n\n\n\n\nWe are delighted to invite the Rev’d Ben Askew to deliver April’s Seminar. \nOver the last few years there has been a growing interest in the idea of re-wilding.  This broad term describes a commitment to letting natural processes lead land management and conservation.  It has led many households to discover wildflowers in the lawn during ‘no mow may’\, to the reintroduction of keystone species into eco-systems\, and to a re-discovery of the abundance of creation\, when allowed space and freedom. I’m keen to learn from this ecological movement\, partly because so much of my faith has been grown by enjoying wilder spaces\, but also because I think we might find that God’s wild Spirit works in surprising and re-energising ways among us as we ease back from control and learn unforced rhythms of grace. \n  \nSpeaker biography to follow. \nBuy tickets on EventBrite
