In this lecture\, Mark Vasey-Saunders argues that this is based on a misunderstanding of the degree to which both conservatives and liberals represent a break with earlier tradition. The current sexuality debate is between two different ways of interpreting the tradition of the church in a modern context. \nSpeaker Bio\nMark studied English Literature and History in York at the then University College of Ripon & York St John\, and briefly worked for IFES in Ukraine before training for ordination at Cranmer Hall. He has worked in several different dioceses as a University Chaplain\, Team Vicar & Pioneer Minister and more recently as Academic Tutor for St Hild College. He completed his PhD from Durham on Evangelical responses to homosexuality in 2013. He oversees the formation of part time and full time Anglican ordinands at St Hild Sheffield\, as well as coordinating the College’s work with Curates. He leads modules in Postgraduate study skills\, Doctrine\, Ethics\, and Anglicanism. Mark is married to Leah\, who is the Vicar of Lancaster Priory Church and Chair of On Fire Mission. \nMark Vasey-Saunders’s new book Defusing the Sexuality Debate was published in June 2023 \nReviews of this book:\nThis book could not be more timely and helpful for those on all sides of the debate. Mark explores the recent history of the evangelical writing on sexuality and deconstructs the idea of an unchanging evangelical consensus on these questions. He opens up an excellent third way for evangelicals to hold diverse views on sexuality questions without scapegoating others or unnecessary division. One of the most helpful books on this debate I’ve yet read. The Right Revd Steven Croft\nMark Vasey-Saunders has written a timely\, wise and essential book\, taking current sexuality debates and placing them in a deeper cultural context. In this talk\, Mark will use some poems explore his theme. \nSpeaker Bio \nThe Very Reverend Dr Mark Oakley was ordained at St Paul’s Cathedral in 1993 and served his curacy at St John’s Wood Church. He was later appointed Chaplain to the Bishop of London and after four years was made Rector of the Actors’ church in Covent Garden. \nHe has subsequently served as an archdeacon in the Diocese in Europe\, Chancellor of St Paul’s Cathedral and Dean of St John’s College\, Cambridge. Mark holds a PhD in English Literature and is an admired author of several books on poetry and spirituality. He has enjoyed success with his most recent book The Splash of Words: Believing in Poetry\, being described by Poet Laureate\, Dame Carol Ann Duffy\, as “beautiful and wise.” He is well known as a speaker and preacher and has been awarded both the Michael Ramsey Prize for theological writing and the Lanfranc award\, by the Archbishop of Canterbury\, for education and scholarship. Mark has a strong commitment to human rights and has served on the board of Liberty and the Civil Liberties Trust\, as well as being awarded one of the first ‘Upstander’ awards for his work with hate crime victims. \nKing’s College London awarded him a Fellowship in recognition of his work and ministry. It creates a kaleidoscope of Biblical texts so that their interaction draws out the author’s fundamental convictions about Jesus. The resulting images bring out new theological insights about Jesus and the congregation. \nWe will explore three Old Testament figures mentioned in Hebrews—the high priest\, Moses\, and Joshua. \nAll three of these figures left God’s people to do important work for them\, before returning. This return of the absent figure forms a significant\, part of Hebrews’ argument. Thus joined together they illuminate who Jesus is. They also show what the ascended Christ is doing for us now and how we should understand our own identity and situation as we await his return. \nDavid Moffitt is one of the very few contemporary scholars to provide fresh and compelling readings of the enigmatic Letter to the Hebrews. I have learned an enormous amount from him; in fact I credit him with transforming my whole understanding of sacrifice in biblical thought. Also\, unlike some top exegetical scholars\, he is a lively and engaging speaker! – Tom Wright \nSpeaker Bio \nDr Moffitt was appointed Reader in New Testament Studies at St Andrews University in 2013\, having previously taught New Testament at Duke Divinity School and Campbell University Divinity School. His research interests orbit around the various ways the earliest Christians understood Jesus and their own identities in relation to Jewish scripture\, practices\, and beliefs. His work is especially focused on the Epistle to the Hebrews and the strategies the text employs to interpret early Christian claims about Jesus’ person\, death\, resurrection\, and ascension in high-priestly and sacrificial terms. His book on Hebrews (Atonement and the Logic of Resurrection in the Epistle to the Hebrews) attempts to show that the Christology and Soteriology developed by the author rests upon his correlation of the basic narrative of early Christian proclamation (i.e.\, Jesus’ life\, death\, resurrection\, and ascension) with the ritual process of the Yom Kippur sacrifices\, the end goal of which was the restoration and maintenance of fellowship between God and creation (i.e.\, atonement). This book nearly achieved inclusion in the New Testament canon. After it was placed in the ‘second rank’\, it disappeared for well over a thousand years. Since its rediscovery it has baffled scholars. No one has been able to work out who wrote it\, when\, where or why. In this lecture Alan Garrow presents a new solution to the puzzle. The Didache is not a single text. Instead\, it is two that have been spliced together and overlaid with additional material. When that process is reversed two ancient treasures emerge. The first is the Complete Apostolic Decree (mentioned in Acts 15)\, the earliest Christian document and the text that set Christianity on course to become a religion separate from Judaism. The second is the Missing Epistle of John (mentioned in 3 John 9)\, a text that helps illuminate doctrines and practices that remain essential for Christians today. \nSpeaker Bio \nAlan Garrow is Vicar of St Peter’s Harrogate and a Member of the Sheffield Centre for Interdisciplinary Biblical Studies. He has published widely in the field of New Testament studies and has a particular interest in how the New Testament texts were used in early Christian worship. He was the Director of Education for the St Albans Diocese from 1999 till his retirement from full-time work in 2015. The subject of the thesis for his Doctor of Philosophy (awarded by the University of Durham in 2018) was\, ‘Popular Theology from Popular Scientists: Assessing the Legacy of Eddington and Jeans as Apologists.’ He has been an Anglican Reader since 1990 and is an Honorary Lay Canon of St Albans. Although Ramsay formulated these many decades ago\, Bishop Arun will help us to understand how relevant they remain and how we can use them as foundations for a Christ-centered life. \nBishop Arun is known as a thought-provoking and entertaining speaker\, and we are delighted that he is able to give this lecture. \nSpeaker Bio \nBishop Arun trained and worked as an employment lawyer before moving into public relations as Director of Communications for Birmingham diocese Press Officer for the Bishop of Birmingham. Whilst training for ordination and serving his curacy at St Mark’s in Harrogate\, he was also Director of Communications for the Archbishop of York. Following a time in Pioneer Ministry in the West Midlands\, he served as Director of Communications for the Archbishops’ Council before returning north as vicar of St Nicholas’ Church\, Durham. A Theological Commentary‘ (2021) and then a few more years on a follow-up ‘Lent Plus’ book\, ‘Meeting God in John: A Companion for Lent\, Holy Week\, Easter\, and Beyond‘ (November 2025)\, I want to share some of the main insights that John has given me. These include seeking answers ro questions such as:  What was John’s aim in writing the Gospel? How should we understand the Prologue? Who is Jesus? What is the meaning of his crucifixion? What are the essential Christian practices taught by Jesus? Can John give us a spirituality for serious times such as ours? How can we share in Jesus’s passionate desire for the unity in love of his followers? How should we read John now? \nSpeaker Bio \nDavid F. Ford OBE is Regius Professor of Divinity Emeritus in the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of Selwyn College. \nAlongside continuing work on Christian theology and on inter-faith relations\, Professor Ford’s current research includes work on: the Gospel of John; glorification; theology\, modernity and the arts; Scriptural Reasoning; contemporary worldviews; and education in schools and universities. In 2021 Baker Academic published The Gospel of John: A Theological Commentary. \nDavid was born in Dublin and is an Irish citizen. He read Classics at Trinity College Dublin\, and then Theology and Religious Studies in Cambridge\, Yale\, and Tübingen. In our lived experience? \nAfter all\, in many ways people of faith\, no faith or some faith seem to live quite similar lives.
