The style is conversational: it works not verse by verse\, but chapter by chapter. You can read a review of Prof Ford’s book in Church Times. \nOver six months we will read a chapter per week of David Ford’s commentary and meet on-line once a week to discuss it with fellow learners for an hour. \nComments from 2023/24\n“The Gospel of John discussions became something of a focal point around which my week was orientated. Each interesting and enlightening discussion took place in a welcoming and supportive atmosphere under the expert guidance of our group leader\, and I look forward to doing something similar again soon.”\nPaul\n\n“The weekly discussion sessions on Ford’s commentary have been a rich opportunity in which to explore our individual and group thoughts and responses. The meetings have provided a safe and supportive context for careful listening and deep sharing.”\nBeverley and Dennis\nRegistration is now closed for 2024/25

SUMMARY:Lecture - David M. Moffitt
DESCRIPTION:Looking through the Kaleidoscope: Hebrews’ Use of Old Testament Narratives in the Light of Jesus’ Ascension and Awaited Return (live lecture)\n\n\n\nVenue:\nSt Mark’s Church\, Leeds Road\, Harrogate (& Zoom option)\nDate:\nSaturday 28th September 2024\, 10.00 – 12.00 noon with breakfast available from 9.30 am\nTickets:\nThis event has now passed\n\n\n\nHebrews’ engagement with the Old Testament is among the most exciting and creative in the New Testament. It creates a kaleidoscope of Biblical texts so that their interaction draws out the author’s fundamental convictions about Jesus. The resulting images bring out new theological insights about Jesus and the congregation. \nWe will explore three Old Testament figures mentioned in Hebrews—the high priest\, Moses\, and Joshua. \nAll three of these figures left God’s people to do important work for them\, before returning. This return of the absent figure forms a significant\, part of Hebrews’ argument. Thus joined together they illuminate who Jesus is. They also show what the ascended Christ is doing for us now and how we should understand our own identity and situation as we await his return. \nDavid Moffitt is one of the very few contemporary scholars to provide fresh and compelling readings of the enigmatic Letter to the Hebrews. I have learned an enormous amount from him; in fact I credit him with transforming my whole understanding of sacrifice in biblical thought. Also\, unlike some top exegetical scholars\, he is a lively and engaging speaker! – Tom Wright \nSpeaker Bio \nDr Moffitt was appointed Reader in New Testament Studies at St Andrews University in 2013\, having previously taught New Testament at Duke Divinity School and Campbell University Divinity School. His research interests orbit around the various ways the earliest Christians understood Jesus and their own identities in relation to Jewish scripture\, practices\, and beliefs. His work is especially focused on the Epistle to the Hebrews and the strategies the text employs to interpret early Christian claims about Jesus’ person\, death\, resurrection\, and ascension in high-priestly and sacrificial terms. His book on Hebrews (Atonement and the Logic of Resurrection in the Epistle to the Hebrews) attempts to show that the Christology and Soteriology developed by the author rests upon his correlation of the basic narrative of early Christian proclamation (i.e.\, Jesus’ life\, death\, resurrection\, and ascension) with the ritual process of the Yom Kippur sacrifices\, the end goal of which was the restoration and maintenance of fellowship between God and creation (i.e.\, atonement).

SUMMARY:Seminar - April 2024 (The Agency of Sin\, live speaker)
DESCRIPTION:“The Agency of Sin in Romans 5-8” – Live speaker with group discussion\n\n\n\nVenue:\nWoodlands Methodist Harrogate\nDate:\nSaturday 13th April 2024\, 10.00 – 12.00 noon with breakfast available from 9.30 am\nTickets:\n\nGeneral admission: £5\nUnder 18s: free\n\nTickets:\nThis event has now passed\n\n\n\nWe usually speak of sin as something that we do. Sin is an anti-God action that we try our best to avoid. Yet\, in Romans 5-8 Paul depicts Sin as that which enslaves\, deceives\, and kills. Sin does something to us. In this seminar we’ll be thinking about Paul’s presentation of s/Sin in Romans 5-8 and its place within Paul’s gospel. \nRev Ben Leighton – CofE Curate in Bradford and PhD Candidate at Trinity College\, Bristol. Currently completing his PhD on ‘The Agency of Sin in Romans 5-8’\, which is due to be submitted at the end of February 2024.

SUMMARY:Lecture - Mark Vasey-Saunders
DESCRIPTION:Why can’t the church talk about sexuality (live lecture)\n\n\n\nVenue:\nSt Mark’s Church\, Leeds Road\, Harrogate (& Zoom option)\nDate:\nSaturday 27th January 2024\, 10.00 – 12.00 noon with breakfast available from 9.30 am\nTickets:\n\n\nGeneral admission: £8\nStudent admission: £5\nUnder 18s: free\nZoom admission: £5\n\n\nTickets:\nThis event has now passed\n\n\n\nPlease note that this lecture aims to explore why this topic has been\, and continues to be\, so difficult for the church to discuss\, rather than arguing for one side or the other.\nWe are delighted to welcome Rev’d Dr Mark Vasey-Saunders to deliver a live lecture for Harrogate School of Theology and Mission on Saturday 27th January 2024\, at St Mark’s Church\, Leeds Road\, Harrogate\, HG2 8AY\, starting at 10 am on the important topic\, Why can’t the church talk about sexuality? \nA common conceptualisation of the current debate over sexuality is that it is one between traditionalists and revisionists. In this lecture\, Mark Vasey-Saunders argues that this is based on a misunderstanding of the degree to which both conservatives and liberals represent a break with earlier tradition. The current sexuality debate is between two different ways of interpreting the tradition of the church in a modern context. \nSpeaker Bio\nMark studied English Literature and History in York at the then University College of Ripon & York St John\, and briefly worked for IFES in Ukraine before training for ordination at Cranmer Hall. He has worked in several different dioceses as a University Chaplain\, Team Vicar & Pioneer Minister and more recently as Academic Tutor for St Hild College. He completed his PhD from Durham on Evangelical responses to homosexuality in 2013. He oversees the formation of part time and full time Anglican ordinands at St Hild Sheffield\, as well as coordinating the College’s work with Curates. He leads modules in Postgraduate study skills\, Doctrine\, Ethics\, and Anglicanism. Mark is married to Leah\, who is the Vicar of Lancaster Priory Church and Chair of On Fire Mission. \nMark Vasey-Saunders’s new book Defusing the Sexuality Debate was published in June 2023 \nReviews of this book:\nThis book could not be more timely and helpful for those on all sides of the debate. Mark explores the recent history of the evangelical writing on sexuality and deconstructs the idea of an unchanging evangelical consensus on these questions. He opens up an excellent third way for evangelicals to hold diverse views on sexuality questions without scapegoating others or unnecessary division. One of the most helpful books on this debate I’ve yet read. The Right Revd Steven Croft\nMark Vasey-Saunders has written a timely\, wise and essential book\, taking current sexuality debates and placing them in a deeper cultural context. All parties should step back and read this clear and eirenic book with humility and openness. \n The Right Revd Nicholas Baines \nWhatever our perspective on sexuality\, Mark Vasey-Saunders is an essential conversation partner who raises crucial questions. Did the earliest Christians teach what is now presented as the traditional view on sexuality? What is really at stake in the current conflict? How can we avoid demonising each other? Defusing the Sexuality Debate approaches this thorniest of contemporary issues with integrity\, humility and rigour. The result is a significant and consequential intervention – one of few contributions with the potential to open up genuinely new horizons. Mark’s careful research empowers us to think more deeply\, and it won’t leave readers unchanged. At its heart is an eirenic plea: we can understand each other better; we can take a longer view; we can be the community of peace the gospel deserves and our world needs. \n Prof Mark Powell \nMark Vasey-Saunders has established himself as one of the sharpest and most insightful commentators now writing on the disputes over sexuality in the Church of England. If the Church is to be delivered from the compulsions that are tearing it apart\, then earnestly heeding his call for Christian humility and heart-searching truthfulness may just be its best hope. \n Prof Robert Song

We will explore how we can take action to bring greater justice and mercy in our world today. \nWith around 50 million people trapped in slavery\, 1 in 4 of these children\, this is a massive issue for our world. How might we engage as individuals and churches to help end slavery in our lifetime? \nhttps://www.ijmuk.org \nhttps://www.ijmuk.org/our-work \nSpeaker Bio \nEsther Swaffield\, part of the UK leadership for IJM will lead this lecture. She heads a dynamic team who work across the UK to engage local partners\, champions and supporters in this global movement to end slavery and violent oppression. She is a gifted communicator and loves sharing stories of breakthroughs from around the world. Esther is based in Durham. \nThe Work of International Justice Mission\nInternational Justice Mission is a global organisation working with partners to protect people in poverty from slavery\, trafficking and violence.\nAs the world’s largest international anti-slavery organisation\, the IJM mission is to rescue millions\, protect half a billion and make justice for people in poverty unstoppable. \nEnding slavery and human trafficking is possible – when people around the world choose to act. \nIJM’s work involves: bringing people to safety\, bringing criminals to justice and strengthening justice systems. They recruit local teams and work with local partners. Survivors regularly become part of the work and leaders themselves. IJM builds trust by tackling individual cases then moves on to system-wide change.\nIJM are making a major impact in a range of locations and independent reviews are showing a 50-85% reduction in slavery and trafficking in areas where they are working. \nhttps://www.ijmuk.org \nIJM need our help as champions to advocate for protection as an essential and tangible future for everyone.

The style is conversational: it works not verse by verse\, but chapter by chapter. You can read a review of Prof Ford’s book in Church Times. \nOver six months we will read a chapter per week of David Ford’s commentary and meet on-line once a week to discuss it with fellow learners for an hour.

SUMMARY:Lecture - Professor Paul Foster
DESCRIPTION:Special offer – buy a 2023/24 season lecture pass\, and attend all four lectures for the price of three. \n\n\nMeet the Apostolic Fathers: Christianity in the first half of the Second Century (live lecture)\n\n\n\nVenue:\nSt Mark’s Church\, Leeds Road\, Harrogate (& Zoom option)\nDate:\nSaturday 7th October 2023\, 10.00 – 12.00 noon with breakfast available from 9.30 am\nTickets:\n\nGeneral admission: £8\nStudent admission: £5\nUnder 18s: free\nZoom admission: £5\n\n2023/4 Lecture Pass:\nBuy tickets to all 4 lectures for the price of 3\nTickets for just this lecture:\nThis event has now passed\n\n\n\nDuring the first and second centuries a group of miscellaneous Christian leaders wrote down their understanding of the meaning of Jesus Christ’s life\, death and resurrection. These authors were considered by later Biblical scholars to be the next generation of Apostles and as a result were named The Apostolic Fathers\, and their works are considered by many to be the most important collection of post-New Testament writings. Indeed a number of these texts were considered for inclusion in the New Testament\, but later rejected. Their obvious significance stems from the fact that they are the first Christian writings produced outside the New Testament Canon and as such contain an essential insight into the development of the early Christian Church and Christian thinking. Much Christian Doctrine came\, not from the New Testament\, but from the writings produced by the early church and in particular the writings of the Apostolic Fathers. Therefore\, these texts are crucial to an understanding of the shaping of Christian thought and Christian doctrine. \nThis lecture is the rescheduled March lecture. \nSpeaker Bio \nProf Paul Foster’s says: \nMy motivation for undertaking theological studies was to be able to read the Bible in its original languages. Although achieving this goal was not something that was quickly realised\, the benefits have been enormous. Reading the New Testament in the very words that the authors penned opens up new horizons of understanding\, it helps one see the original writers’ concerns more clearly\, and brings the world of the New Testament alive. \nI enjoy working across a range of New Testament and Early Christian literature\, since that permits a holistic view of the development and emergence of the early Jesus movement. In particular in relation to the New Testament\, I have worked on pre-gospel sources such as Q\, and the M source although I am sceptical that the latter ever existed as a coherent source. In relation to the New Testament writing a long-term interest is the Gospel of Matthew\, and several letters of Paul including Colossians and the Thessalonian epistles. Furthermore\, the phenomenon of wider gospel literature\, known as the non-canonical gospels\, is also another area that has fascinated me as a window into the piety of early believers. I have written extensively on the text known as the Gospel of Peter\, as well as a range of other non-canonical gospels. \nA final major area of interest in my academic biography is collection of writings known as the Apostolic Fathers. These writings reflect the emergence of structures that became foundational in the early church. The writings of Ignatius and Polycarp depict early Christianity in the first half of the second century. \nTogether these interests permit an overview of Christianity in the first two centuries of its existence.

This lecture addresses some intriguing issues in modern contemplative spirituality and its missional opportunities. He was the 104th Archbishop of Canterbury\, a position he held from December 2002 to December 2012. Previously the Bishop of Monmouth and Archbishop of Wales\, Williams was the first Archbishop of Canterbury in modern times not to be appointed from within the Church of England. \nHaving spent much of his earlier career as an academic at the universities of Cambridge and Oxford successively\, Williams speaks three languages and reads at least nine. After standing down as Archbishop\, Williams took up the position of Chancellor of the University of South Wales in 2014 and served as Master of Magdalene College\, Cambridge between 2013 and 2020. SUMMARY:Revd Roy Searle
DESCRIPTION:‘Wisdom from the past\, illumine our path for today’: how St Benedict and Celtic spirituality is inspirational for these changing world times. \nIt couldn’t be timelier as\, in the words of Bob Dylan’s song\, The Times They area Changin’\, and the world is being shaken. As Roy puts it\, ‘The tectonic plates\, politically\, economically\, environmentally and societally are shifting. The idea of returning to normal is to deny reality. In the light of such a changing world and church\, we ask\, How Then Shall We Live? How do we sing the Lord song in a strange land? What does it mean to love God and follow Christ in a changing world?  As we embrace the challenges and opportunities of the present times look to the future that is uncertain\, we will explore the wisdom that comes to us in scripture and the monastic traditions of Benedictine and Celtic spirituality. In an emerging new Dark Age they speak of light with which to illumine our paths.’ \nVenue: St Mark’s Church\, Leeds Road\, Harrogate (& Zoom option) \nDate: Saturday 19th November\, 10.00 – 12.00 noon with breakfast available from 9.30 am \nBooking: STILL ONLY £8.00 per session (price held since 2013) including a continental breakfast and mid-morning refreshments; students: £5 per lecture; under 18s free. \nFees payable on the day by contactless card\, cheque (to Harrogate School of Theology and Mission) or preferably in advance by the online booking system Eventbrite. \nZoom live-stream of lectures: £5 per person\, under 18s free. SUMMARY:Revd Dr Lucas Mix
DESCRIPTION:How is Heaven related to Space?\nGalileo famously quipped “The intention of the Holy Ghost is to teach us how one goes to heaven – not how heaven goes.” Jesus Ascension was not the same as the ascent of a rocket. Lucas Mix will talk about the history of ascent narratives\, tales of journeying into the heavens\, both scientific and spiritual – from Plato to Carl Sagan and The Expanse. SUMMARY:Lifetrack seminar (DVD & facilitated discussion)
DESCRIPTION:Theology and living wisely part 1 –  Prof David Ford \nProf. David Ford explores how theology is really about having a life-long conversation with God and drawing on the wisdom of prior conversations as recorded in the Scriptures. Those conversations involve the disciplines of listening as well as conversing\, thinking as well as feeling (faith has its various moods!) and writing as well as reading. Through engaging in our own conversations with God\, and learning from wider conversations about God\, we can grow in what Prof. Ford calls ‘doing theology for God’s sake’. SUMMARY:Canon Dr Mark Powley
DESCRIPTION:In Search of the Presence of God: How We Meet God in Worship\nWhat is the presence of God? How do we come to know it? Is it possible to make sense of our experience in a way that honours both God and science? Mark Powley will share the fruits of ten years of PhD research on the presence of God in worship. There will be an opportunity to consider the ‘signs of God’ in our own lives. The session will also look at how we as human beings enable and shape experiences of God’s presence. Ultimately the presence of God is not the experience of a thing\, but a rich process of partnership in which each of us plays a role. As we regather after lockdown\, this may help us be more aware of how we need each other if we are to seek Gods face. \nCost:  £8.00 per session\, including continental breakfast available from 9.30 am and mid-morning refreshments (Covid 19 guidance allowing);  \nstudents: £5 per lecture;  \nunder 18s free.  \nFees payable preferably in advance by the online booking system Eventbrite or on the day by contactless card or cheque (to Harrogate School of Theology and Mission).\nZoom live-stream of lectures: £5 per person\, bookable via Eventbrite.

SUMMARY:Revd Ian Parkinson (Leadership Specialist\, CPAS) "For the equipping of the saints: the gift of Christian leadership" (live lecture)
DESCRIPTION:Effectiveness in leadership is not measured so much by what any leader achieves but rather by whom they raise up and equip for service. The development and empowering of others certainly seems to have been a top priority for Jesus and those who followed after him. With particular reference to his example\, in this session we will unpack the NT leadership emphasis on growing others in discipleship and ministry\, and explore what this might mean for us today.

SUMMARY:Prof. Keith Elliott "What makes a book 'holy scripture'?" (live lecture)
DESCRIPTION:Professor Elliott will concentrate on the New Testament but will discuss why\, for instance\, the Gospel of Thomas or the so-called gnostic gospels (which Dan Brown relied on to claim that Jesus was married to Mary Magdalene) are not ‘holy scripture’.  \nProfessor Elliott has suggested these texts for further reading related to his lecture:\nJ.K. Elliott\, The Apocryphal New Testament: A Collection of Apocryphal Christian Literature in an English Translation based on M.R. James (Oxford: Clarendon Press\, 1993; paperback 2005) .\n\nJ.K.Elliott\, The Apocryphal Jesus: Legends of the Early Church (Oxford: Oxford University Press\, 1996; revised paperback 2006).\n\nDavid R. Cartlidge and J. Keith Elliott\,  Art and the Christian Apocrypha (London and New York\nRoutledge\, 2001).\n\nEdgar J. Goodspeed\, Strange New Gospels (New York: Books for Libraries —  Essay Index Reprint Series) \, 1971 based on the 1931 edition).\n \nElaine Pagels and Karen King\,  Reading Judas: The Gospel of Judas and the Shaping of Christianity (New York and. London: Penguin Books; paperback 2007).\n\nRichard Valentasis\,  The Gospel of Thomas (London and New York: Routledge\, 1997).
