SUMMARY:Revd Roy Searle
DESCRIPTION:‘Wisdom from the past\, illumine our path for today’: how St Benedict and Celtic spirituality is inspirational for these changing world times. \nIt couldn’t be timelier as\, in the words of Bob Dylan’s song\, The Times They area Changin’\, and the world is being shaken. As Roy puts it\, ‘The tectonic plates\, politically\, economically\, environmentally and societally are shifting. The idea of returning to normal is to deny reality. In the light of such a changing world and church\, we ask\, How Then Shall We Live? How do we sing the Lord song in a strange land? What does it mean to love God and follow Christ in a changing world?  As we embrace the challenges and opportunities of the present times look to the future that is uncertain\, we will explore the wisdom that comes to us in scripture and the monastic traditions of Benedictine and Celtic spirituality. In an emerging new Dark Age they speak of light with which to illumine our paths.’ \nVenue: St Mark’s Church\, Leeds Road\, Harrogate (& Zoom option) \nDate: Saturday 19th November\, 10.00 – 12.00 noon with breakfast available from 9.30 am \nBooking: STILL ONLY £8.00 per session (price held since 2013) including a continental breakfast and mid-morning refreshments; students: £5 per lecture; under 18s free. \nFees payable on the day by contactless card\, cheque (to Harrogate School of Theology and Mission) or preferably in advance by the online booking system Eventbrite. \nZoom live-stream of lectures: £5 per person\, under 18s free. SUMMARY:Revd Dr Lucas Mix
DESCRIPTION:How is Heaven related to Space?\nGalileo famously quipped “The intention of the Holy Ghost is to teach us how one goes to heaven – not how heaven goes.” Jesus Ascension was not the same as the ascent of a rocket. But what is the relationship between life in heaven and life in outer space? Lucas Mix will talk about the history of ascent narratives\, tales of journeying into the heavens\, both scientific and spiritual – from Plato to Carl Sagan and The Expanse. For centuries\, physical and spiritual “up” were aligned in the popular imagination. Astronomy and biology have revealed more complex – but no less Biblical – models for the place and direction of life in the cosmos. Come find out more about the stories we tell and why they matter for the future of humanity. \nAttending in person\, the cost is £8.00\, including continental breakfast available from 9.30am\, and mid-morning refreshments; students: £5 ; under 18s free. SUMMARY:Lifetrack seminar (DVD & facilitated discussion)
DESCRIPTION:Theology and living wisely part 1 –  Prof David Ford \nProf. David Ford explores how theology is really about having a life-long conversation with God and drawing on the wisdom of prior conversations as recorded in the Scriptures. Those conversations involve the disciplines of listening as well as conversing\, thinking as well as feeling (faith has its various moods!) and writing as well as reading. Through engaging in our own conversations with God\, and learning from wider conversations about God\, we can grow in what Prof. Ford calls ‘doing theology for God’s sake’. Come and hear more from this arresting speaker and enter the dialogue as we all seek to live wisely together. \nCost £2 \, Under 18s free \nZoom link and talk summary will be sent out a couple of days in advance to ticket holders.

SUMMARY:Canon Dr Mark Powley
DESCRIPTION:In Search of the Presence of God: How We Meet God in Worship\nWhat is the presence of God? How do we come to know it? Is it possible to make sense of our experience in a way that honours both God and science? Mark Powley will share the fruits of ten years of PhD research on the presence of God in worship. There will be an opportunity to consider the ‘signs of God’ in our own lives. The session will also look at how we as human beings enable and shape experiences of God’s presence. Ultimately the presence of God is not the experience of a thing\, but a rich process of partnership in which each of us plays a role. As we regather after lockdown\, this may help us be more aware of how we need each other if we are to seek Gods face. \nCost:  £8.00 per session\, including continental breakfast available from 9.30 am and mid-morning refreshments (Covid 19 guidance allowing);  \nstudents: £5 per lecture;  \nunder 18s free.  \nFees payable preferably in advance by the online booking system Eventbrite or on the day by contactless card or cheque (to Harrogate School of Theology and Mission).\nZoom live-stream of lectures: £5 per person\, bookable via Eventbrite.

SUMMARY:Revd Ian Parkinson (Leadership Specialist\, CPAS) "For the equipping of the saints: the gift of Christian leadership" (live lecture)
DESCRIPTION:Effectiveness in leadership is not measured so much by what any leader achieves but rather by whom they raise up and equip for service. The development and empowering of others certainly seems to have been a top priority for Jesus and those who followed after him. With particular reference to his example\, in this session we will unpack the NT leadership emphasis on growing others in discipleship and ministry\, and explore what this might mean for us today.

SUMMARY:Prof. Keith Elliott "What makes a book 'holy scripture'?" (live lecture)
DESCRIPTION:Professor Elliott will concentrate on the New Testament but will discuss why\, for instance\, the Gospel of Thomas or the so-called gnostic gospels (which Dan Brown relied on to claim that Jesus was married to Mary Magdalene) are not ‘holy scripture’.  \nProfessor Elliott has suggested these texts for further reading related to his lecture:\nJ.K. Elliott\, The Apocryphal New Testament: A Collection of Apocryphal Christian Literature in an English Translation based on M.R. James (Oxford: Clarendon Press\, 1993; paperback 2005) .\n\nJ.K.Elliott\, The Apocryphal Jesus: Legends of the Early Church (Oxford: Oxford University Press\, 1996; revised paperback 2006).\n\nDavid R. Cartlidge and J. Keith Elliott\,  Art and the Christian Apocrypha (London and New York\nRoutledge\, 2001).\n\nEdgar J. Goodspeed\, Strange New Gospels (New York: Books for Libraries —  Essay Index Reprint Series) \, 1971 based on the 1931 edition).\n \nElaine Pagels and Karen King\,  Reading Judas: The Gospel of Judas and the Shaping of Christianity (New York and. London: Penguin Books; paperback 2007).\n\nRichard Valentasis\,  The Gospel of Thomas (London and New York: Routledge\, 1997).

SUMMARY:Revd Dr Malcolm Guite "Christ and the Poetic Imagination"
DESCRIPTION:This will be live-streamed via Zoom\, starting at 10am. There will be an opportunity to ask questions after the lecture\, and we expect to finish about 11.30am. We are very excited to be welcoming Revd Dr Malcolm Guite who is well known as a poet and was due to come to us in March at the start of the first lock-down. \nWe are making a small charge of £4 per computer / tablet etc. for this lecture and we have some tickets available free for Under 18s. As this is the event we had to cancel at the end of last season\, we are offering this event free to 2019/20 Season Ticket holders\, but please book in with Eventbrite and select this ticket option. \nThe Zoom link will be under “Additional Information” at the end of your confirmation e-mail from Eventbritre. We will send out a reminder to ticket holders a couple of days before the event. \nIf you have any questions\, please contact us on info@hstm.org.uk \nWe hope to see many of you on 5th December \nMalcolm Guite will explore the links and analogies between the working of the poetic imagination\nand the understanding of Christ as Word made Flesh. In particular\, he will look at how far an\nunderstanding of the Logos\, and the doctrine of incarnation may underpin and give grounding to\nworks of literary art and imagination. Malcolm will look at how Shakespeare’s account of the poetic\nimagination in a Midsummer Night’s Dream borrows strongly from the language about incarnation in\nJohn’s Gospel. After developing some of the parallels between the unique mystery of the incarnation\nand the continuous mysteries of human creativity and art\, Malcolm will then look at how a fresh\nencounter with the Doctrine of Christ as Logos became central for Coleridge and led him to a new\ntheology of imagination. Finally he will look at how Christian Faith clarified and deepened the\nimaginative life of some of the Oxford Inklings\, particularly CS Lewis. \nFor more information about Malcolm Guite\, go to “Our Speakers”

SUMMARY:Bibletrack seminar "St Paul’s Letters part 1" Dr Chris Tilling (DVD & facilitated discussion)
DESCRIPTION:We have been carefully planning the best way to deliver our Events during the Covid crisis. We are delighted to offer you the option of attending our first Event either in-person at the Mowbray Community Church\, or on-line\, via Zoom. There is a full Risk Assessment in place\, which anyone is welcome to see\, if they want to check in advance the measures we have put in place for attendance in person. \nThe first Seminar will inevitably be a “trial run” to allow us to check and fine tune the technology. There will therefore be no charge for this particular seminar. \nIt will\, however be essential for participants to book in advance through Eventbrite. \nEach link will take you to the relevant Eventbrite Booking Line where you will be asked to confirm the number of people attending with you (including you)\, and to provide an email address for booking confirmation and to receive essential information\, specific to your attendance choice nearer to the date of the Event.

SUMMARY:Rt Revd James Jones KBE "The spiritual and moral imperatives in the life of Christ" (live lecture)
DESCRIPTION:The former Bishop of Liverpool\, Rt Revd James Jones KBE\, is perhaps best known as the Chair of the Hillsborough Panel which reported in 2012 on the events surrounding the FA Cup semi-final at Hillsborough when 96 Liverpool supporters died. He will be speaking on ‘The spiritual and moral imperatives in the life of Christ’. \nIn the Gospel of Luke Jesus says fourteen times ‘It behoves me…’ He talks explicitly about the moral and spiritual imperatives under which he lives and dies. In an age that is at sea about what is right and wrong can these imperatives be applied to our own lives? \n\nBecause of the personal nature of some of his lecture and the likelihood that the main content will form part of a new book\, there is no recording of his lecture available on our website.\n \n\nBishop James Jones has been in contact to say he found his engagement both with the Harrogate School of Theology and the students on the St Hild Easter School very stimulating. He has now published on his website the main part of his lecture from January on ‘The spiritual and moral imperatives in the life of Christ’. He also used the material for the St Hild College Easter School. You will find his lecture at http://bishopjamesjones.com/speeches/harrogate_school_of_theology.pdf and we hope that you will find the text a stimulus during these difficult times.

SUMMARY:Revd Prof Jeremy Duff "Today is the day – for everyone! Growing Church in Luke and Acts"
DESCRIPTION:In Jesus’ lifetime\, people met him face to face\, and he gathered around him a community of Jewish men and women who thought he was the one to redeem Israel. Today we use the language of ‘meeting Jesus’ and of growing the church (community)\, but mean something a little different –  meeting Jesus in a non-physical way\, and a community made up of people from every nation and culture. In this lecture we will see how Luke and Acts together achieve this transformation\, and present a Jesus who meets everyone ‘today’\, and how Jesus’ community breaks boundaries. Come and engage with what the bible says about conversion\, response and the call to abandon our comfort for the sake of those that Jesus is saving – if you dare!

SUMMARY:Rt Rev Dr Helen-Ann Hartley: "To read\, mark\, learn and inwardly digest: some reflections on a diet of Biblical Interpretation"
DESCRIPTION:The Rt Rev Dr Helen-Ann Hartley is the Bishop of Ripon. She will be speaking on “To read\, mark\, learn and inwardly digest: some reflections on a diet of Biblical Interpretation.” \nThe Bible is the foundation of our faith\, and we probably have our favourite bits\, but what about the parts we don’t understand\, or don’t agree with? If it’s all the Word of God how do we navigate its terrain? In this lecture\, Bishop Helen-Ann will share some of her own reflections on a number of years pondering these questions and help us to reflect positively on how we can live faithfully with Scripture in our present context. \nBishop Helen-Ann is an able communicator and her lecture will be very accessible as well as challenging us to consider how we use scripture.

SUMMARY:Revd Prof Dr Charlotte Methuen The Reformation and Brexit: history and the position of the UK in Europe
DESCRIPTION:The English Reformation has been cited as evidence both for and against the decision of the UK to leave the EU.  Henry VIII’s idiosyncratically independent stance has been contrasted with the European dimension of Thomas Cranmer’s contacts and the influence of continental Reformers in England and in Scotland.  This paper will examine those arguments\, and explore them in the context of the engagement of the Churches of England and Scotland in the debates surrounding Brexit.  What insights might the history of the church offer in understanding British politics today?
