SUMMARY:Rt Revd James Jones KBE "The spiritual and moral imperatives in the life of Christ" (live lecture)
DESCRIPTION:The former Bishop of Liverpool\, Rt Revd James Jones KBE\, is perhaps best known as the Chair of the Hillsborough Panel which reported in 2012 on the events surrounding the FA Cup semi-final at Hillsborough when 96 Liverpool supporters died. He will be speaking on ‘The spiritual and moral imperatives in the life of Christ’. \nIn the Gospel of Luke Jesus says fourteen times ‘It behoves me…’ He talks explicitly about the moral and spiritual imperatives under which he lives and dies. In an age that is at sea about what is right and wrong can these imperatives be applied to our own lives? \n\nBecause of the personal nature of some of his lecture and the likelihood that the main content will form part of a new book\, there is no recording of his lecture available on our website.\n \n\nBishop James Jones has been in contact to say he found his engagement both with the Harrogate School of Theology and the students on the St Hild Easter School very stimulating. He has now published on his website the main part of his lecture from January on ‘The spiritual and moral imperatives in the life of Christ’. He also used the material for the St Hild College Easter School. You will find his lecture at http://bishopjamesjones.com/speeches/harrogate_school_of_theology.pdf and we hope that you will find the text a stimulus during these difficult times.

SUMMARY:Revd Prof Jeremy Duff "Today is the day – for everyone! Growing Church in Luke and Acts"
DESCRIPTION:In Jesus’ lifetime\, people met him face to face\, and he gathered around him a community of Jewish men and women who thought he was the one to redeem Israel. Today we use the language of ‘meeting Jesus’ and of growing the church (community)\, but mean something a little different –  meeting Jesus in a non-physical way\, and a community made up of people from every nation and culture. In this lecture we will see how Luke and Acts together achieve this transformation\, and present a Jesus who meets everyone ‘today’\, and how Jesus’ community breaks boundaries. Come and engage with what the bible says about conversion\, response and the call to abandon our comfort for the sake of those that Jesus is saving – if you dare!

SUMMARY:Rt Rev Dr Helen-Ann Hartley: "To read\, mark\, learn and inwardly digest: some reflections on a diet of Biblical Interpretation"
DESCRIPTION:The Rt Rev Dr Helen-Ann Hartley is the Bishop of Ripon. She will be speaking on “To read\, mark\, learn and inwardly digest: some reflections on a diet of Biblical Interpretation.” \nThe Bible is the foundation of our faith\, and we probably have our favourite bits\, but what about the parts we don’t understand\, or don’t agree with? If it’s all the Word of God how do we navigate its terrain? In this lecture\, Bishop Helen-Ann will share some of her own reflections on a number of years pondering these questions and help us to reflect positively on how we can live faithfully with Scripture in our present context. \nBishop Helen-Ann is an able communicator and her lecture will be very accessible as well as challenging us to consider how we use scripture.

SUMMARY:Revd Prof Dr Charlotte Methuen The Reformation and Brexit: history and the position of the UK in Europe
DESCRIPTION:The English Reformation has been cited as evidence both for and against the decision of the UK to leave the EU.  Henry VIII’s idiosyncratically independent stance has been contrasted with the European dimension of Thomas Cranmer’s contacts and the influence of continental Reformers in England and in Scotland.  This paper will examine those arguments\, and explore them in the context of the engagement of the Churches of England and Scotland in the debates surrounding Brexit.  What insights might the history of the church offer in understanding British politics today?

SUMMARY:Revd Alan Garrow: What did Jesus really say?
DESCRIPTION:It might seem quite straightforward – Jesus said what he is reported as saying in the Gospels. At one level this is true. At another\, however\, things may be rather more complicated. A significant complicating factor is that\, for more than a century\, most scholars have suspected the existence of an entity known as Q. This Q is a hypothetical source that many scholars believe was copied by the authors of Matthew’s and Luke’s Gospels. If Q existed then\, by definition\, it predates those Gospels – so it might provide an even more accurate account what Jesus said\, and what the first Christians believed about him\, than the Gospels do. This could be significant because Q\, as commonly understood\, doesn’t include an account of Jesus’ death or resurrection. \n  \nBut does the Q theory rest on a firm foundation? In this morning’s live lecture Alan Garrow will show that the idea of Q\, as traditionally conceived\, rests on two simple logical errors. And\, when these errors are corrected\, a very different picture of the relationship between the Gospels starts to take shape: the traditional Q theory collapses; previously overlooked pre-Gospel sayings of Jesus come to light; and Luke’s Gospel emerges as a particular source of insight into ‘what Jesus really said’.

SUMMARY:Revd David Runcorn: The road to growth less travelled - spiritual paths in a missionary church
DESCRIPTION:We are in unfamiliar country. A faith urgently needs to seek new ways of being present to a culture adrift from any spiritual roots and unable to recognise its loss. We will be exploring\, experimenting and in conflict for the foreseeable future. ‘We do not see what we shall become’ (1 John 3.2). This is both exciting and disorientating. How individuals and communities are to live and pray faithfully through such times needs much wisdom. Jesus describes his way of life as less travelled (Matthew 7.13-14). I want to explore the challenge to Christian growth and maturing in our present context. In a church that is seeking to make ‘all the difference’ are there pathways of the spirit that remain ‘less travelled’?

SUMMARY:Dr Casey Strine: Migration and Exile then and now
DESCRIPTION:Dr Strine will explore what both the Old Testament and New Testament say about migration\, developing the insight that a massive number of biblical texts are written by migrants to other migrants about migration. By recognising this feature\, analysing what these texts say about migration\, and thinking carefully about how this compares to contemporary experiences\, Strine will outline a biblical basis for responding to the current debates about migrants and migration policy in the United Kingdom.

SUMMARY:Professor John Barclay: "Paul\, grace and gift: does the best gift have no strings attached?"
DESCRIPTION:Professor John Barclay Lightfoot Professor of Divinity at the University of Durham on Saturday 21st January. His title is Paul\, grace and gift: does the best gift have no strings attached? Thinking with Paul about giving and receiving gifts. \nFor a number of reasons (Western) Christians have become champions of the notion that the ‘pure’ gift is unilateral\, expecting no return and with no strings attached. We will explore together whether this is in fact the best theological model of gifts\, and we will mine in particular the letters of Paul to help us think about gifts\, reciprocity\, community and what difference it makes to put all human giving in the framework of divine giving to us. We will explore what this means for models of charity\, for the relationship between the church and the rest of society\, and for the goals we set for the local and global social action that engage many churches today.

SUMMARY:Ann Morisy: "Mission and venturesome love: what does venturesome discipleship look like?"
DESCRIPTION:Venturesome love often begins with pondering ‘Could I? Should I? Could We? Should We?’ Such pondering and commitment is at the heart of discipleship. Venturesome Christians risk powerlessness and being overwhelmed – like Jesus\, who also opted to be without power and faced up to being overwhelmed. What does venturesome discipleship look like? Where do we start? Might the story-rich life that comes with being venturesome be a boon in relation to mission? Might such reflective risk-taking also open us to cascading grace in a needy world? \nAnn Morisy is a well-regarded keynote speaker on mission and community ministry. She has worked predominantly in the field of social responsibility and social action in both rural and urban contexts. Her presentations are down-to-earth but informed by scholarship as well as being engaging and light-hearted.

SUMMARY:Revd Dr Alan Garrow: "Eating and evangelism in the very early Church"
DESCRIPTION:The Revd Dr Alan Garrow is Vicar of St Peter’s Harrogate and an Honorary Academic in the Institute for Interdisciplinary Biblical Studies at the University of Sheffield. He will be speaking on Eating and evangelism in the very early Church. \nWhy did people in the first century decide to follow Jesus? On the face of it\, it seems an odd choice – one likely to make life considerably more difficult and dangerous. And yet\, people joined the Jesus-movement in their thousands. Alan Garrow proposes that it was the way the first Christians ate that caused others to join them – which leads to the obvious question\, why not eat in this way today?

SUMMARY:Revd Dr Derek Tidball: "The crown and the cross: the relationship between the kingdom of God and the cross of Christ"
DESCRIPTION:Revd Dr Derek Tidball\, a former principal of London Bible College. The title of his lecture is ‘The Cross and The Crown’: the relationship between the kingdom of God and the cross of Christ.\nThe major theme of Jesus’ teaching and ministry in the synoptic gospels is the kingdom of God while in the New Testament letters the meaning and significance of Christ’s crucifixion is prominent. We will explore why this should be so and how the twin emphases of the crown (kingdom) and cross (atonement) fit with each other and indeed are inextricably linked.

SUMMARY:Dr David Instone-Brewer: "Divorce and remarriage in bible times and today"
DESCRIPTION:We welcome Dr David Instone-Brewer who is Senior Research Fellow in Rabbinics and the New Testament at Tyndale House in Cambridge. His title is ‘Divorce and Remarriage in Bible times and today’. He will examine what the Bible says about divorce\, as it would have been understood by the original readers of the New Testament. David has written widely on this subject and Cornerstone Bookshop will as usual be present selling some of his titles as well as other books of theological interest. \nHis understanding of the Rabbinic dispute about the interpretation of Deuteronomy 24:1 gives us the context to interpret Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 19 and to deal with pastoral issues around marriage and divorce today.
