Re-reading the Gospel of John : A 6-month journey in 2026/27

October 15, 2026 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Re-reading the Gospel of John : Invitation to a 6-Month Journey in a Group with a Guidebook

The Gospel of John is profound, intriguing, fascinating, and mysterious.

One of the most insightful and gripping attempts to do it justice is Prof David Ford’s The Gospel of John – A Theological Commentary. Unlike most commentaries, this can be read as literature. The style is conversational: it works not verse by verse, but chapter by chapter. You can read a review of Prof Ford’s book in Church Times.

We have enjoyed our partnership with Prof Ford, and were delighted to invite him not only to deliver a a lecture last September, but also to host a special evening in Harrogate with some previous study group alumni.

Due to a lot of interest in running a study group again, we are delighted to be able to offer 2 study groups starting in October 2026, and running to Easter 2027. One group will run on Thursday evenings, and the other on Sunday evenings – you can sign up for either Thursdays or Sundays, and will remain in that group for the duration.

Over six months we will read a chapter per week of David Ford’s commentary and meet on-line once a week to discuss it with fellow learners for an hour.

To join one of our study groups we ask you to:

  • Commit to coming to every session:
    • every Sunday for the Sunday group
    • every Thursday for the Thursday group
  • Acquire a copy of David Ford’s commentary
  • Read the relevant chapter in advance of each session

Spaces are limited, and we will close registration once each group is full. We need a minimum number of members for each group, and we will not run a group that is not viable. You will not be able to see other member’s details, or they yours.

Comments from previous groups

“The Gospel of John discussions became something of a focal point around which my week was orientated. Each interesting and enlightening discussion took place in a welcoming and supportive atmosphere under the expert guidance of our group leader, and I look forward to doing something similar again soon.”
Paul
“The weekly discussion sessions on Ford’s commentary have been a rich opportunity in which to explore our individual and group thoughts and responses. The meetings have provided a safe and supportive context for careful listening and deep sharing.”
Beverley and Dennis
