We are delighted to invite Dr Shaun Stevenson to deliver April’s seminar.

Biography

Dr Shaun Stevenson is a Lecturer at Manchester Metropolitan University, where he has taught since 2022. He holds a BA in Theology from Leeds Trinity University, an MA in Continental Philosophy from the University of Warwick, and a PhD in Philosophy from Warwick. He also completed a PGCE at the University of Worcester.
Shaun’s teaching and research interests span philosophy of education, inclusive pedagogy, and continental thought. He was twice nominated and awarded the Warwick Award for Teaching Excellence in 2017, and has previously lectured in Philosophy of Education at Warwick. He is certified in Understanding Autism and Mental Health First Aid, reflecting his commitment to accessible and compassionate learning environments.

Interests and expertise

Shaun’s research centres on philosophies of death, with a particular focus on Deleuze studies and the development of a Hellenistic ethics of self-cultivation. His doctoral thesis, Positively Dead: An Examination of the Death Drive in Gilles Deleuze’s Difference and Repetition, explored the role death plays in Deleuze, Hegel, Spinoza, and Nietzsche, with a strong emphasis on naturalistic mysticism. He engages extensively with 19th-century German philosophy and 20th-century French thought, and is committed to exploring philosophy as a practical discipline. His work seeks to integrate philosophical teaching into a broader praxis of life, fostering reflective, embodied approaches to learning and self-understanding.
