We are inviting expressions of interest in joining a future Gospel of John study group, using Prof David Ford’s The Gospel of John – A Theological Commentary. You are not committing to join the group at this point, and don’t need to purchase the commentary until we confirm the group is running and you accept a place.

To register interest in being part of a group towards the end of 2026, please provide your details via the form below. This is a separate mailing group which will only be used for a potential 2026 study group, and you can unsubscribe at any time.

Information about the Study Group

The Gospel of John is profound, intriguing, fascinating, and mysterious.

One of the most insightful and gripping attempts to do it justice is Prof David Ford’s The Gospel of John – A Theological Commentary published in 2022.

Unlike most commentaries, David Ford’s can be read as literature. The style is conversational: it works not verse by verse, but chapter by chapter. You can read a review of Prof Ford’s book in Church Times.

Over six months we will read a chapter per week of David Ford’s commentary and meet on-line once a week to discuss it with fellow learners for an hour.

Commitment required

  • Purchase your own copy of the commentary
  • Commit to attending the group (online) for an hour every week for 6 months, starting Autumn 2026 (with a break for Christmas).
  • Commit to reading the relevant chapter of the commentary before each week’s meeting

We are also running a seminar on 28th February 2026 which is a sort of taster session for the study group, looking at John 3. You will not need David Ford’s commentary to February’s seminar.

Comments from previous groups

“The Gospel of John discussions became something of a focal point around which my week was orientated. Each interesting and enlightening discussion took place in a welcoming and supportive atmosphere under the expert guidance of our group leader, and I look forward to doing something similar again soon.”
Paul
“The weekly discussion sessions on Ford’s commentary have been a rich opportunity in which to explore our individual and group thoughts and responses. The meetings have provided a safe and supportive context for careful listening and deep sharing.”
